TrivandrumLife >> The youngest councilor of Thiruvananthapuram corporation is set to become the youngest Mayor in the country. Twenty-one-year-old college student Arya S Rajendran, who was recently elected as the councilor of Mudavanmugal ward, has been chosen by the CPM district committee to be the next mayor of city Corporation, a post which is reserved for women this term.
Arya, an SFI leader and state president of Balasankham, will be elected on December 28, when the council would meet to select Mayor, deputy mayor and other standing committee heads.
Arya is a BSc Mathematics student at All Saints College and CPM Chala area committee member.
Though LDF had fielded Pushpalatha and O G Oleena as mayor-candidates, both had failed in the local body elections. Peroorkada councilor and retired government employee Jameela Sreedharan and another young candidate Gayathri Babu were considered for the Mayor post. Finally, the CPM decided to select Arya for the post. If elected, Arya will be the youngest Mayor in the country. The LDF had won the council by winning 51 out of the total 100 wards.
Speaking to media on Friday, Arya said that she was not given any official confirmation. “I would abide by party’s decision,” she said
